A small dog sitting on a sofa; our team at MG Legal offer home visits, by appointment, so you can seek legal advice from the comfort of your own home.
When you are considering making a Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney, one of the most daunting aspects can be needing to attend upon your solicitor’s office. Even worse, if you have difficulties attending upon the office, or prefer to chat from the comfort of your own home, finding a solicitor who offers home visits can be difficult.

At MG Legal, we understand the limitations and issues that some of our client’s face, and how these may prevent them attending our office at all. That’s why, since we opened our doors in 2010, we made the decision to offer home visits in our local area, at no additional cost to our clients. Indeed, we can also offer home visits further afield, although these may come at a small additional charge.

We don’t just offer home visits for our elderly clients. As local Solicitors, and members of Association of Lifetime Lawyers, previously known as Solicitors for the Elderly, who deal with elderly and vulnerable clients on a daily basis, our team can offer home visits to everyone who needs one: whether our clients suffer from anxiety, are not as ‘steady on their feet’ as they used to be, or they prefer to chat from the comfort of their own home, our local solicitors can assist.

Do you need an appointment for a home visit?

Yes, our local solicitors will not necessarily be able to come and see you there and then. We would generally need to arrange an appointment for later on in the same day, or later in the week. Most of our home-visit clients like to arrange their appointments well in advance, to ensure that they have plenty of time to consider their instructions, especially when our clients are instructing our local solicitors with the preparation of their all-important Will, or Lasting Powers of Attorney

How much do local solicitors charge for home visits?

If you are local to the area of one of our offices – Garstang, Lancaster, Longridge or Lytham – our team do not charge an extra fee for a home visit to discuss your instructions. If you are located a bit further away, for example in Morecambe, Bare, Heysham, South Preston (Longton, Penwortham, Hutton, Kirkham, etc), our team charge a reasonable travel cost of up to £50.00 plus VAT (which includes travel time costs and the cost of the travel itself).

How will I provide you with ID for a home visit?

Our team of local solicitors have two options: we can either check your ID, take it away with us, and return it to you by an agreed method (i.e. recorded delivery or home delivery by a member of our trusted team), or we can take copies of the documents there-and-then, returning the originals to you, and ensuring that the copies are processed in line with data protection policies.

Do I need to have other people present during my appointment?

Generally, we need to see our instructing clients on their own. For example, if you and your spouse are both instructing us to deal with a property sale or purchase, our team would speak to both of you together. If you are solely instructing us to draft your Will, we would need to see you by yourself. However, if you would feel more comfortable with a family member or friend being present, we would just need to ask them to wait in another room for certain parts of the appointment. Discuss this with our local solicitors when you arrange the appointment to confirm the requirements, depending on your matter.

Will a home visit delay my legal matter?

No, not at all. Our local solicitor will bring with them a Notice of Cancellation, and a request to start work within 14 days. You can consider both, and if you really want us to start work immediately, you can sign the request to start work. If you would rather consider matters over the 14 days, that’s fine, too. You can just wait for the 14-day period to elapse, and we will then commence work on your behalf (once we have received your signed confirmation of instructions and payment on account, of course).

How can I arrange a home visit?

You can contact our offices, here, or you can email wills@mglegal.co.uk, and our local solicitors will be back in touch with you within one working hour to arrange an appointment or to discuss your matter further.
