Paramedics and first responders play a huge role in the NHS and our healthcare system, and are a vital resource to patients in emergency situations who can’t make it to the hospital before receiving treatment.

Still, nothing is perfect, and sometimes paramedics can make mistakes, or act negligently, leading to injury or illness to patients.

When this happens, injured patients are able to make a paramedic negligence claim with our specialist medical negligence solicitors, and achieve the financial compensation that they deserve for the injuries that they suffered due to the negligence of the first responders.

Causes of paramedic negligence:

With the role and responsibilities of paramedics and ambulance staff being so varied, there are a huge number of negligent actions and issues that can lead to paramedic negligence. Some of the causes of paramedic negligence that our solicitors can help with, include:

Medical misdiagnosis by paramedics leading to the wrong, or no treatment being given to the patient

Failure by the paramedics to respond to a call or patient in need

failure to receive the necessary emergency treatment at the scene

manual handling problems or dropping a patient from the transporting ambulance bed
failing to transfer a patient to hospital when it was necessary

Man injured in a road traffic accident dies after 4-hour ambulance wait

In Wrexham County, an 86-year-old man has died after lying in the road waiting more than four hours for an ambulance after he was hit by a car. George Ian Stevenson was hit by a car near his home in Johnstown, Wrexham county, last Wednesday evening at half 7, but it wasn’t until after half 11 that an ambulance arrived at the scene. This is an all-too-familiar situation for our ambulance negligence solicitors, who know that the wait times patients are experiencing for ambulances and paramedic care can be extremely dangerous.

Speaking of her grandfather’s care, Mr Stevenson's granddaughter, Ellie Williams said on the night of the accident it was raining, freezing and foggy, and that her grandad was ”Left there for four hours, begging for help, waiting for help. And that makes us so sad.” Speaking on the incident, Welsh Ambulance Service operations director Lee Brooks said it was working to establish 'the full sequence of events' and would contact Mr Stevenson's family. Mr Brooks said: 'What we can say at this early stage is that at the time of this call, all of our ambulance vehicles were already committed to other patients in the community or at hospitals, where handover delays in north-east Wales were especially difficult on the evening of 2 March.'

Our paramedic negligence solicitors regularly work with clients who have suffered from further injury and illness, both short-term and long-term, due to unprecedented and unacceptable ambulance delays. If you or your loved one have suffered from injury or illness in any way because of the negligent actions of a paramedic or first responder, or a delayed response, then do not hesitate to get in touch with our specialist paramedic negligence solicitors today about your potential no-win no fee paramedic negligence claim for financial compensation.

Elderly man awarded £18,000 after his wife fell in hospital:
After the man’s wife was taken into hospital suffering from COPD, and experiencing low oxygen levels, she unfortunately became injured in a fall from the ambulance trolley. When she arrived at hospital after being transferred in an ambulance, she was asked to move from the ambulance trolley onto the hospital ward bed, without being offered any assistance or the trolley being lowered down to allow her to safely get off the trolley.

Unfortunately, the patient fell from the hospital trolley and suffered from a fractured hip as a result. In the subsequent medical negligence claim commenced by the patient herself, it was claimed that the NHS hospital in question did not properly assess the safety and risks involving with the moving and handling of the patient, and that they failed to ensure her safe transfer from the ambulance trolley onto the hospital bed. If the correct procedures and checks had been followed, then the lady would not have fallen and suffered from a fractured hip, and the associated pain and surgery.

After the patient in question tragically died in April of 2021 to causes unrelated to the claim and paramedic negligence at hand, her husband continued with the paramedic negligence claim on her behalf, and has successfully obtained a settlement of £18,000 in financial compensation. What can I claim for in my paramedic negligence claim?

When you make a paramedic negligence claim, you are making a claim for two different types of compensation that relate to your injuries or illness. The first of these, known as special damages, will be calculated on an individual basis, based on how much your injuries have impacted your daily life, such as your ability to earn money work. Special damages also include: lost earnings, medical expenses, travel expenses, future loss of earnings, loss of congenial employment, care costs.

The other part of your paramedic negligence claim, known as general damages, is compensation for the pain and suffering that your injuries have caused. When you choose to work with MG Legal, you will be assigned a designated solicitor who will go above and beyond to win the maximum amount of financial compensation for you.

How much is my paramedic negligence claim worth?

If you have suffered from paramedic negligence, you may be wondering, ‘how much is my paramedic negligence claim worth?’, or ‘what is the average payout for paramedic negligence?’.

The answer to this question will differ depending on the injuries that you have sustained due to paramedic negligence, and how severe they are. Your claim for paramedic negligence compensation will be broken down into two parts, which can be seen in full here. In terms of the general damages, the section paid out for the pain and suffering of the injuries alone, MG Legal’s paramedic negligence solicitors have put together the below table using the relevant guidelines for the compensation available for different injuries.
