What's it like to work in a solicitors?
Posted on 30th April 2019
You could say that there is no ‘normal’ day when you work for a Solicitors in Preston. I start my day around 8:30am, getting our file management system powered up, and making sure that I have my morning coffee (although sometimes I try and be healthy and opt for water – it’s just not the same!).
First of all, I’ll go through all my emails and make sure that I deal with anything urgent from the evening before. Anything that requires a lengthy reply, or needs to wait until I have further information, gets flagged to be dealt with later in the day.
A typical day starts with dealing with any post that has landed over the weekend. Usually, our clients pop things through the door, and we have a few replies to our previous week’s letters from banks or insurance companies. I mark everything with the date to show it has been received, and scan it all on.
Once this has been dealt with, we can start responding! As Solicitors in Preston, it is important that we respond to any post as quickly as possible, and make sure that we are always one step ahead.
A usual day for the Private Client Department normally involves drafting a few Wills, and dealing with enquiries in relation to the administration of an estate. When an estate is being finalised, we like to ensure that we have draft accounts prepared as quickly as possible, so that when we have received all the funds, we can look at distributing the money within a number of weeks.
Among all the paperwork and account-drafting (it really is more interesting than it sounds!), we are always answering queries from clients new and old a-like, and liaising with our Solicitors in Lancaster and Solicitors in Garstang to make sure that any Preston-based clients are kept fully-apprised of their matter.
Two days a week, I work alongside Mark Gregory to ensure that MG Legal’s marketing strategy is kept up-to-date and fresh. We like to discuss any new opportunities that may have presented themselves, such as supporting St John’s Hospice’s calendar for 2018, or supporting a local magazine, the Carrier Pigeon. There are always so many different marketing openings and, sadly, we just can’t support them all, so we like to make sure that the proposals are a good fit for our principles.
Mark and I also work through any general administration details, such as office cover, if there is any annual leave booked in, and the day-to-day running jobs of the firm.
Most days go on until 6pm, but on the off chance that I do manage to sneak out of the office before that time, I like to try and catch some sun (with my lovely pup, Annie) and then I head home to start my University work.
