Our team are celebrating 100 years of women in law!
Posted on 17th January 2020
23rd December last year (yes, we know it still doesn’t seem like 2020, yet!) marked 100 years since females could become lawyers.
Receiving Royal Assent (Royal approval, in other words) in 1919, the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 opened the discrimination between men and women, allowing women to practise as solicitors, barristers, magistrates, sit on juries and receive degrees from universities on completion of their studies.
Women have since had some fantastic ‘firsts’: Ivy Williams’ accession to the bar in 1922, Rose Heilbron and Helena Normanton took silk in 1949 and, more currently, Lady Hale became the first female Lord of Appeal in 2004, the first female justice of the Supreme Court in 2009, and the Court’s first female president in 2017.
So, to celebrate 100 years of equal-access to law, our team of local solicitors have decided to tell you a little bit more about our fantastic team of solicitors in Preston and Lancaster.
Chloe Cardwell
Chloe LOVES the law, and has always wanted to be a solicitor, and now she is! As many of our clients and social media followers will be aware, Chloe qualified as a solicitor last year, and is now working as part of our property department.
Chloe started working with our team of family solicitors in Lancaster in 2015, and has since worked her way through to our Garstang office to join our team of personal injury compensation solicitors, even spending some time with our Wills and Probate solicitors in Longridge over the years.
Outside of work, Chloe is a dedicated ‘mum’ to her pup, Charlie (who is very cute!), and she loves to spend time relaxing and reading up on local law topics (as cliché as that sounds, she really does enjoy it!). Chloe is also a MASSIVE food-lover, and spends her time researching the menus of local restaurants in Lancaster, to see where she can test her culinary taste buds.
You can contact our Chloe Cardwell via email to enquiries@mglegal.co.uk.
Sarah Lees
Like our Chloe Cardwell, Sarah qualified as a solicitor last year, and now works alongside Chloe in our property department, as part of our team of property solicitors in Garstang (and Lancaster and Longridge!).
Sarah is a born-outdoorsy person, and she likes to spend her time at her families’ farm, and with her horses (which, like Charlie, are so cute).
Sarah is often found working out at the gym (at 5am!) and likes to keep us all on plan with our fitness – although she does like to sneak a treat cake or biscuit in the afternoon, too.
Having worked as part of our family solicitors in Lancaster as part of her training contract, Sarah can give you advice on both family law and property matters, and she covers all of our offices, with her fantastic local knowledge.
Sarah can be contacted, here.
Lucinda Wyer
Lucinda joined MG Legal’s team of Solicitors in Lancaster in November 2018, and has flourished since!
Working alongside our Sara Williams, who you can read about below, Lucinda is the face of our Lancaster office, meeting and greeting our lovely clients on a day-to-day basis, and dealing with all of our enquiries.
An avid Harry Potter fan, Lucinda likes to use her annual leave touring the locations of the Harry Potter sets and reading (and re-reading) the books. She’s also a HUGE animal lover, and likes to provide her colleagues with pup-dates (puppy updates) whenever she can.
Lucinda also has a breath of knowledge about Wills and Probate, so assists our team of Wills and Probate solicitors in Longridge with new enquiries and clients from our Lancaster office.
Another valuable asset, Lucinda can be contacted via email to family@mglegal.co.uk.
Sara Williams
As head of our family law team, Sara deals with a range of family legal matters, including child contact disputes, divorce proceedings and related financial matters, separation and change of name deeds. Sara is also another point of contact for our Wills solicitors in Longridge’s Lancaster clients.
Sara is a hard-worker, so at weekends she will often be around and about at the offices, getting a head start on her next work week. However, when she’s not in the office, you will often see her out and about her local area, going for long walks and chilling out.
Sara comes from the Ribble Valley, and doesn’t live too far from some very delicious cake shops (we’re not jealous, you are).
Sara started out in our Longridge office, and now covers all three – Garstang, Longridge and Lancaster, although she can be found at our Lancaster office day-to-day.
If you want to get in touch with Sara, you can contact her, here.
Lynsey Oldham
Lynsey started in our accounts department in 2014, and is now on her way to becoming a qualified lawyer with CILEx.
Lynsey enjoys spending her weekend with her furry-friend, Ebony, and taking long walks with her family. Living near to the Morecambe Bay, Lynsey loves soaking up the sun (or getting soaked through in the rain), and could spend hours walking around her local area.
Lynsey, like most of our team, also loves food, and brings many culinary delights with her to work, making the rest of the team jealous!
If you need to contact Lynsey, you can contact her at the Lancaster office on 01524 581 306.
Lorraine Gill
The newest member of our team, Lorraine is a member of our Wills and Probate solicitors in Longridge, also covering both of our other offices in Garstang and Lancaster.
Lorraine loves the Law, too, and decided to qualify to make sure that she could do what she loved every day. Not content with just dealing with Wills and Probate matters, Lorraine is working her way through her STEP qualification to make sure that she stays up-to-date for our clients.
Also, part of the ‘dog-club’, Lorraine’s cute pooch often visits the local areas – Longridge, Garstang and Lancaster, as she loves long walks! In her free time, Lorraine loves visiting her family across the country, as well as keeping up-to-date with current legal matters.
Lorraine can be contacted at our Longridge office on 01772 783 314.
Hope Jordan
The youngest member of our team, Hope joined our solicitors in Garstang in 2013, whilst she was studying her A-Levels.
Hope started full time after she finished college, and then decided to tackle the next obstacle – university. Still working full time, Hope studies for her law degree with the Open University on a part time basis. So far, Hope’s favourite subject is criminal law, and her least favourite (which, she imagines, is most people’s favourite) is constitutional / administrative law so, for example, how Brexit affects the UK law.
Another dog-lover, Hope’s pooch Annie is a lover of walks and food, so if you see her out and about, feel free to approach her with a treat, or two.
Hope doesn’t have much time for anything else in between university work and actual work, however she loves to read, in her free time, and watching legal programmes on Netflix. Like our Chloe Cardwell, Hope has wanted to be a lawyer since the age of just 7 years!
So, if you want to meet with a member of our team to discuss your legal matter, including our Mark Gregory and Philip Cranage, contact us by email at enquiries@mglegal.co.uk or pop into your local office.
