Our Lasting Power of Attorney Solicitors discuss the delays faced by the OPG registering LPAs and how this could affect you. Read to find out more.
According to an update published by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), they are currently facing delays in dealing with the registration of Lasting Power of Attorney documents. They state the reasons for the backlog being due to staff working from home and adherence to social distancing guidelines. The OPG had implemented new tools to assist working from home, however, following lockdown restrictions easing, they have experienced an increase in applications, resulting in further delays. Their update went onto say: “While we’re working to process applications as quickly as possible, please allow up to 15 working weeks from receipt of your LPA for applications to be registered”.

For many, the update will not have any bearing. However, for others who perhaps have an urgent need for their registered Lasting Power of Attorney documents, it could cause some inconvenience. Earlier in the update, the Office of the Public Guardian point out that they believe Lasting Powers of Attorney should be registered in advance of them being needed, which will mean that your Attorneys will have this document available when they need to use it, or when you direct them to use it.
