CQC concerns for University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust:

As a part of their inspection of the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust, the Care Quality Commission has shared concerns over the staffing of the A&E department, as well as over the risk management of mental health patients. Our medical negligence solicitors in Preston can reveal that he overall inspection, which was carried out in August 2021, found that the trust requires improvement. More specifically, improvement in safety, effectiveness, responsiveness, and use of resources. While the trust was thought to be outstanding in their caring approach, this does not make up for problems with the safety and responsiveness in patient care.

The trust has been told that they MUST make the following improvements by the CQC:

The trust must ensure that there are enough suitably qualified, competent, skilled and experienced medical staff on each shift to deliver safe and effective care and treatment
The trust must ensure they provide patients with a first assessment within 15 minutes of arrival to the ED in line with the conditions placed upon their registration
The trust must ensure that patients are risked assessed appropriately, in a timely way and provide mitigation for risks when identified
The trust must ensure patients are kept safe from infection and avoidable harm and staff receive appropriate guidance and support to enable them to do this
The trust must ensure all risks are appropriately identified, assessed and mitigation put in place where possible

The importance of patient safety in A&E departments:

Our medical negligence solicitors in Preston specialise in A&E negligence claims, and we know just how important it is for patient care to be kept to a high standard in A&E departments. However, we also know how overrun these departments can become, leading to patient care being affected.

Some of the most common signs of A&E negligence that our medical negligence solicitors see, include:

Staff turning an injured person away from the A&E department without being seen by an A&E doctor
Inadequate patient examination- including rushing examination and misdiagnosing the cause of a condition
Delayed treatment– an injured patient left waiting for hours, without medical attention, leading to a patient’s condition worsening
Inadequate postoperative after care

More than 1.75 million patients are seen in the A&E department each month up and down the country, which makes it the busiest department of most hospitals. Because of this, it is arguably, the place where most medical mistakes and acts of negligence are made. Because of the fast-paced nature, patients have the potential to endure A&E negligence such as additional injuries or illnesses due to lack of proper care, misdiagnosis, or undiagnosed issues.

However busy the department is, you are entitled to proper medical care and attention when you visit A&E. Our medical negligence solicitors in Preston regularly settle high-value claims for financial compensation for our clients who have suffered due to negligent care in A&E, all on a no win no fee basis
