Here at MG Legal, our food contamination solicitors specialising in product recalls and mislabelled allergens, have been informed that the supermarket chain has issued an urgent recall of all ‘Love Your Veg Butternut Squash & Lentil Lasagne’ products, due to the lasagne containing both meat and dairy products.

The Food Standards Agency has recognised the health risk that this could pose to those with milk allergies and milk sensitivity.

As you are probably aware, a growing proportion of the population is now suffering from cow’s milk allergies. It is thought that these cow’s milk allergies now make up between 10% and 19% of all of the food-included anaphylaxis cases and serious allergic reactions that occur in the UK. This makes it the third most common food product to cause anaphylaxis, after peanuts and tree nuts.

What is a milk allergy?

People who suffer from a milk allergy show an abnormal immune response to milk products, usually cow’s milk. These people recognise the proteins found in milk as harmful, and release chemicals to neutralise them, prompting an allergic reaction. The reaction usually occurs not long after consuming the milk product, and can have a number of symptoms varying from mild to severe.

These include:
Vomiting
Hives
Itching or tingling around the lips and mouth
Digestive problems
Abdominal pain
Anaphylaxis (in extreme cases)

Can I make a compensation claim for a milk allergy from a recalled product?

While Sainsbury’s has made a full recall of the product, and has confirmed that all of the Love Your Veg lasagne products should be returned to the store for a full refund, this is simply not enough for those who have suffered from allergic reactions while eating something that was falsely labelled.

If you have unknowingly consumed the recalled vegan lasagne product, and have suffered from an allergic reaction of any kind as a result, then you could be entitled to financial compensation through a food allergy compensation claim.
