Whilst safety should be of the utmost priority in the amusement park industry, there are unfortunate cases where incidents do occur. Although such incidents are rare, when they do occur, the consequences can be extreme due to the level of machinery involved and the potential damage that can be caused.

Not wishing to cast a grey cloud over what, in the majority of cases, is an enjoyable and thrilling experience, where things go wrong at theme parks, the results can be catastrophic and severe. This was the case when the fun was sadly stopped for one girl who plummeted 23ft to her death as a result of an amusement park ride fault.
One theme park, in Jizzakh – Uzbekistan, offers a number of rides for thrill seekers to enjoy. This particular ride involved a 360-degree rotating swing feature. Daring riders who hopped on board, however, were not greeted with the experience they had anticipated. During the ride, there was a fault which resulted in the metal arm, rotating the carriages, snapping and dropping to the ground, resulting in the fatality of the 19-year-old girl. The theme park is yet to comment on the tragedy, however, the seriousness of the matter is evident.

We all know that faults can occur and that sinking feeling when visiting amusement parks and our favourite ride is closed, however, safety needs to be the priority and this case only reinforces this further. A similar ride, at Drayton Manor in Staffordshire, operating in the same way was also recently reported to have broken down leaving passengers stranded at 120ft high. Thankfully, there were no casualties, or serious injuries, and riders were safely evacuated.

In the present case, there is no doubt that there was a duty of care owed to the young girl, and the theme park have failed in this respect.
